How Google+ differs from Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn and why you should care

Prospecting on Google+I started this week’s blog series about using Google+ to find quality prospects with an introduction to Google+ but I don’t know if I was successful in convincing my readers that this is a worthwhile social network. So here’s what sets Google+ apart from the other social networks.

I mentioned yesterday that the first reason you should consider Google+ is because Google is the largest search engine in the world. That in and of itself should be enough, but here’s some additional information on how this network is set up that makes it really, really useful. Google+ was developed after Facebook and Twitter were well established so they were able to take all the things that work about those networks and then layered them on top of everything that Google already has to offer. Local businesses stand to gain the most from this social network because Google has harnessed the tools of their local directory listings with the ability to share that information with a network. That’s the main difference between Google+ and all the other sites. It was set up after studying all the positives of the other social media sites and then they added in all the data that Google has on hand to be able to give searchers and business owners to be very targeted in who and what they want to find on Google+. This is so incredibly valuable both for the searcher and the business owner.

You can have your fully optimized listing actually driving traffic to your website, or even just to your phone if you don’t have a website, 24 hours a day because people are on Google searching for your products or services. And the more people that share, the more people see your listing. Let me back up a bit because I might have skipped over an important point. You don’t have to have a website to get business from the internet. That’s right. Even if you don’t have the money right now to set up a professional website, you can use the power of the internet to build your business. As long as your business is listed in the right directories online (and Google+ Local should be the first one) and has listings on review sites like Yelp, Manta or Citysearch just to name a few, you can start building your online presence without having to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars to set up a website.
